How Project Smiles Works

Project Smiles is designed to help children grow emotionally and mentally through daily journaling, affirmations, and goal setting. With fun stickers to decorate their journal and a calming music playlist to help them focus, Project Smiles makes journaling a positive and engaging daily habit.

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1:

Decorate Your Journal

On the first day, your child gets to personalize their journal by decorating the cover with the provided pack of stickers. They can also use other materials or stickers they like. This helps make the journal uniquely theirs and encourages excitement for the journaling journey ahead.

Tip for Parents: Encourage your child to take their time and be creative! This activity can help them feel a sense of ownership over their journal.

Step 2:

Create a Calm and Focused Space

Each day, help your child get into the right mindset by setting up a calm and focused environment. You can play relaxing music from our Project Smiles Playlist (above) to help them concentrate.

Tip for Parents: Choose a quiet space where your child feels comfortable. A relaxing environment can make journaling feel like a soothing part of their day.

Step 3:

Begin with a Positive Affirmation

Each day, your child will start with a positive affirmation to boost their confidence and set the tone for the day. Affirmations help children develop a positive self-image and encourage self-belief.

Example Affirmation: I am brave, I am kind, and I can achieve great things.

Tip for Parents: Say the affirmation aloud with your child or encourage them to repeat it multiple times to reinforce positive thinking.

Step 4:

Set a Goal for the Day

After the affirmation, your child will write down a goal for the day. This could be something small, like ‘Today I will share with my friends,’ or something bigger, like ‘Today I will try a new activity.’ Setting daily goals helps children focus and work toward personal growth.

Tip for Parents: Help your child think of goals that are achievable but meaningful. Encourage them to reflect on their progress at the end of the day.

Step 5:

Reflect with Words or Drawings

Next, your child will use the provided daily journal prompt to explore their feelings, experiences, and thoughts. These prompts are designed to help your child get to know themselves better, build trust in their abilities, and express their emotions in a healthy way.

Example Journal Prompt: What is one thing that made you smile today? Why?

Tip for Parents: Encourage your child to write freely without worrying about spelling or grammar. The goal is self-expression, not perfection.

Step 6:

Celebrate Your Child’s Efforts

Each time your child completes a journal entry, celebrate their efforts and growth. Journaling is a powerful tool for emotional development, and your encouragement will help them stay engaged.

Tip for Parents: Offer positive reinforcement by acknowledging their effort and discussing what they wrote, if they’re comfortable sharing.
